Characteristics

Monocarpic. Leaf 1, up to 300 x 170 mm, margin crenate, base cordate, dark green above, usually purplish-red below, pilose, sometimes glandular. Inflorescences: the first often from the apex of the hypocotyl, thereafter from the upper surface of the leaf at the base of the midrib, c. 36-flowered, few open together. Peduncles up to 300 mm long; pedicels c. 8-18 mm long, both pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Calyx divided to the base into 5 linear segments, 2-5 x 0.5-1.5 mm. Corolla20-55 mm long, pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs outside, minutely glandular-pubescent inside near mouth; tube subcylindric, abruptly deflexed then directed forwards, laterally compressed in the mouth, 30 mm long, 2-5 mm broad, pale violet to whitish; limb oblique, more conspicuous than the tube, pale to medium violet, throat white or pale yellow, lateral sinuses very narrow; upper lip of 2 divaricate lobes, lower lip 8-20 mm long, 12-30 mm broad, all lobes oblong to suborbicular,6-12 x 4-11 mm. Stamens arising about halfway up corolla tube, filaments c. 3 mm long, sparsely glandular; anther lobes 1 mm long, white. Ovary 6-20 mm long, appressed-pubescent; style terete, 1-5 mm long; stigma subcapitate or bilobed with the lobes held laterally. Capsule 42-91(66 ± 10) mm long, 2 mm in diam. Seeds 0.5-0.8 mm long, reticulate.
