Characteristics

Monocarpic. Leaf 1, up to 400 x 300 mm, pilose, margin crenate, base cordate. Inflorescences crowded, many flowers open together. Peduncles up to 100 mm long, very stout; pedicels up to 50 mm long, both pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Calyx divided to the base into 5 lanceolate segments, 7 x 2 mm. Corolla 28-38 mm long, glandular-pilose outside, glabrous inside; tube broadly cylindric, widening abruptly upwards and almost straight, 15-20 mm long, 12-13 mm across mouth between lateral sinuses, deep violet with a white streak below; upper lip of 2 deltoid lobes 9 x 7 mm, reflexed in the upper half; lower lip c.14-18 mm long, 25 mm broad, lobes suborbicular, 9 x 10 mm, deep violet grading to deep blue merging into a deltoid white patch in the throat, with 2 deep violet ellipses at the apex of the patch. Stamens arising in upper third of corolla tube, filaments 5 mm long, curved, curve greatly dilated, deep violet, glandular; anther lobes 2.5 mm long, pale violet. Ovary 10 mm long, densely glandular; style terete, 10 mm long, glandular at the base; stigma stomatomorphic. Capsule 24-40 mm long, 3 mm in diam. with prominent apiculus. Seeds 0.6-0.8 mm long, reticulate.
