Characteristics

Monocarpic. Leaf 1, oblong, up to 170 x 150 mm, thin-textured, margin coarsely serrate, undulate, base subcordate to cuneate, decurrent on the short, thick stalk, both upper and lower surfaces almost glabrous but with short-stalked glands and lightly sprinkled with dark red pigment granules, the stalk villous with white, downward-pointing hairs, the veins below often tinted red. Inflorescences from apex of stalk and base of mid-rib, crowded, many flowers open together. Peduncles stout, up to 140 mm long; pedicels 10-30 mm long, both pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Calyx divided to base into 5 lanceolate segments, c. 5 x 1 mm, brownish. Corolla c. 20 mm long, almost glabrous, but glandular particularly on outside of limb and with a narrow palate of minute unicellular hairs along floor of tube and base of lower lip, pale violet to pinkish-red, base of lower lip whitish, floor of tube greenish, spotted crimson and with crimson streaks extending onto lower lip, the mouth of the tube blotched deeper violet-purple above; tube cylindric, bulbous at base, narrowed towards middle and strongly curved downwards, then directed forwards and becoming ventricose below the mouth, with a double keel along the floor of the tube and base of lower lip, 8-10 mm long, 8 mm across mouth between lateral sinuses; upper lip of 2 orbicular lobes, c. 5 x 5 mm, strongly reflexed; lower lip 7-13 mm long, lobes orbicular, 5-7 x 6-8 mm. Stamens arising in upper third of corolla tube, filaments c. 5 mm long, anther lobes 2 mm long. Ovary c. 5 mm long with spreading glandular and eglandular hairs; style c. 4 mm long, slightly dorsoventrally compressed, sparsely pilose, glandular; stigma stomatomorphic. Capsule 18-28(22 ± 3) x 2 mm, with a prominent apiculus. Seeds 0.4 mm long, reticulate.
