Characteristics

Monocarpic or perennial, all parts except upper surface of leaf spattered with orange-red pigment granules. Leaves 1 or several, developing a stalk (petiolode) at flowering, stalk up to 80 mm long, 15 mm diam., blade oblong, c. 150-300 x 40-200 mm, thick-textured, margin coarsely crenate, often undulate, base narrowed, upper surface grey-green, shortly and densely appressed-pubescent, lower surface densely pubescent, main veins villous with white, downward-pointing hairs. Inflorescences from base of midrib and apex of stalk, many flowers open together. Peduncles stout, up to 150 x 7 mm; pedicels up to 20 mm long, both villous with white downward-pointing hairs. Bracts elliptic, up to 16 x 5 mm. Calyx divided to the base into 4 elliptic segments, c. 12 x 3 mm, greenish over-laid dull red, villous. Corolla c. 50 mm long, pilose and with short gland-tipped hairs outside, especially on lobes, sparsely glandular inside, particularly in upper half; tube narrowly cylindric at base widening gradually upwards, arcuate, c. 40 mm long, 10 mm across mouth between lateral sinuses, pink to reddish outside, pinkish inside, floor white striped red, the stripes sometimes reduced to lines of dots; limb almost regular, 2upper lobes orbicular, c. 5 x 7 mm, 3 lower lobes c. 6 x 8 mm, pink to reddish. Stamens arising in upper third of corolla tube, filaments green, sparsely glandular, anther lobes 2 mm long, brownish-violet. Ovary 1  long, pilose, eglandular; style 70 mm long, terete becoming dorsoventrally compressed apically; stigma stomatomorphic. Capsule c. 25-30 x 4 mm with a very prominent apiculus. Seeds 0.5-0.7 mm long, verruculose.
