Characteristics

Perennial herb with creeping, rooting petiolodes and simple erect flowering shoots composed of up to 5 phyllomorphs developed one above the other; petiolodes pilose, up to c. 15 mm in diam., the creeping ones of indefinite length and rooting, the erect ones up to c. 150 mm, without roots. Lamina oblong, up to 900 x 220 mm, margin crenate, base cuneate, upper surface sparsely pilose or glabrescent, lower glabrescent, the veins pilose. Inflorescences usually 1, occasionally 2, immediately below lamina, many flowers open together. Peduncles up to 30  long; pedicels c. 10-18 mm long, both pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Bracts elliptic, up to 12 x 4 mm. Calyx divided to the base into 5 linear segments, 10 x 1.5 mm, glandular-pilose. Corolla honey-scented, 28-40 mm long, glandular-pilose outside, glabrous inside except for a few delicate, gland-tipped hairs at base of tube and on roof of mouth, and unicellular hairs on the floor of the tube in the lower half, pale blue to whitish, with 2 parallel raised keels running along the floor of the tube and out to the base of the lower lip, the keels often yellow, always variously spotted or striped violet and usually a yellow stripe on the floor of the tube; tube subcylindric, somewhat keel-shaped, 18-23 mm long, 7-9 mm across mouth; limb straight, both lips porrect, upper lip of 2 suborbicular lobes, 6-8 x 7-9 mm, lower lip 15-18 mm long, lobes elliptic to suborbicular, 5-10 x 5-10 mm. Stamens arising in lower third of corolla tube, filaments conspicuously toothed at junction with connective, 9 mm long, white, abruptly curved, curve dilated, sparsely glandular; anther lobes 1.5 mm long, yellow, glandular; staminodes very conspicuous. Ovary c. 8 mm long, pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs; style c. 6 mm long, dorsoventrally compressed, sparsely glandular; stigma of 2 unequal, reniform, papillose lips. Capsule 30-62(47 ± 7) mm long, 2 mm in diam., apiculate. Seeds 0.8-1 mm long, reticulate.
