Characteristics

Monocarpic or perennial. Leaves 1 or several, prostrate to erect, blade c. 20-150 x 10-120 mm, base cordate to cuneate, upper surface more or less appressed-pilose or shortly appressed-pubescent, lower surface green or purple-red, pilose on the veins, pubescent between them. Inflorescences often with both branches of the dichasium well-developed and spreading, up to c. 12 flowers per branch, several opening together. Peduncles up to 160 mm long; pedicels 25-90 mm long, both pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Bracts elliptic, up to 10 x 4 mm. Calyx segments linear or lanceolate, 2-4 mm long, spreading or appressed. Corolla 13-30 mm long, glandular-pilose outside, glabrous inside or with a patch of short glandular hairs on the roof of the mouth or with a beard of unicellular hairs at the same place; tube cylindric at base, becoming abruptly more or less campanulate upwards, somewhat saccate below the mouth, 5-1  long, 6-20 mm across mouth between the lateral sinuses, violet; upper lip of 2 suborbicular lobes, 3-10 x 4-13 mm; lower lip 7-20 x 12-30 mm, lobes suborbicular, 4-13 x 5-13 mm, medium violet with a deltoid white blotch in centre, the apex extending as a white wedge along floor of tube, sometimes bright yellow near the insertion of the filaments. Stamens arising in the lower third of the corolla tube; filaments 5 mm long, curved and swollen above the base, usually yellow, glabrous or with a dense zone of glandular hairs near the top or the lower hairs eglandular or with a few scattered glandular hairs. Ovary 2-4 mm long, green, shortly glandular-pilose; style c. 2-4.5 mm long, terete, glandular-pilose; stigma not much wider than the style, stomatomorphic. Capsule 11-24(17 ± 3) mm long, c. 2 mm diam., crowned by the prominent persistent style base. Seeds 0.5-0.7 mm long, reticulate, verruculose in some populations.
