Characteristics

Monocarpic. Leaf 1, up to 400 x 350 mm, pilose, dark green above, often purplish-red below, margin crenate, base cordate. Inflorescences from base of midrib, up to 36-flowered. Peduncles up to 365 mm long; pedicels c. 10-20 mm long, both pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Bracts elliptic to lanceolate, up to 10 x 2 mm. Calyx divided to the base into 5 linear segments, 3 x 1 mm. Corolla up to 45 mm long, glandular-pilose outside, glandular inside around mouth, white to medium violet; tube subcylindric, abruptly deflexed then directed forwards, mouth laterally compressed, 8-20 mm long, 2-3 mm broad; limb oblique, more conspicuous than the tube, sometimes patterned with impressed lines, sometimes suffused violet, lateral sinuses usually very broad, upper lip of 2 divergent to divaricate, oblong to obovate lobes, 8-10 x 4-6 mm, lower lip 8-30 mm long, c. 10-35 mm broad, lobes oblong to obovate,7-9 x 3.5-6 mm. Stamens arising about halfway up corolla tube, filaments 1.5-3 mm long, sparsely glandular; anther lobes 1 mm long, white; ovary 4.5-7 mm long, appressed-pubescent; style terete, 1.5-2.5 mm long, pubescent with glandular and eglandular hairs; stigma subcapitate. Capsule 25-84(56 ± 7) mm long, 1.5 mm in diam. Seeds 0.5-0.7 mm long, reticulate.
