Characteristics

Corolla c. 15–22 mm. long, glandular-pubescent outside, bearded with long unicellular hairs within on the roof of the tube, white flushed dull purple below on the outside of the tube, with three broad reddish-purple bands inside on the floor, these bands sometimes bifurcate or each split into 2 to 3 narrower stripes; tube 8–12 mm. long, c. 6–8 mm. across the mouth, slightly swollen on the upper side at the base, somewhat deflexed and ventricose on the lower side towards the mouth; upper lobes 4–5 × 3–4 mm.; lower lip c. 7–10 mm. long, projecting forwards, lobes 4–6 × 4–6 mm.

Leaves up to c. 10, 2-ranked at the apex of the rhizome, the flowering ones with conspicuous petiolodes; petiolode curved, up to about 10 cm. long, reddish-purple, pilose with deflexed to spreading reddish-purple hairs; lamina elliptic, up to 33 × 13 cm., often much smaller, base cuneate, not or scarcely decurrent on the short petiole, silky appressed-pilose above, very densely short-pilose on the nerves below and sparingly so between the nerves, margin irregular-serrate, lateral nerves numerous, spaced at 5–10 mm., reddish-purple below.
Stamens arising in lower third of tube; filaments 2.5–3.5 mm. long, swollen above the middle, purple-spotted; anthers more or less triangular in outline, lobes 1.5 mm. long, scarcely divergent; staminodes minute.
Peduncles up to 20 cm., reddish-purple, with spreading reddish-purple eglandular hairs in the lower part and some glandular ones intermixed above.
Ovary 5–7 mm. long, pilose with spreading eglandular hairs; style 4–6 mm. long, pubescent; stigma stomatomorphic, papillose.
Inflorescences 1–3, arising a little below the base of the lamina, up to 20-flowered, the cymes open and spreading.
Capsule (old) up to 26 mm. long, terminating in the persistent style.
Pedicels up to 20 mm., with most of the hairs glandular.
Calyx divided to the base into 5 lanceolate segments.
Bracts linear, up to 7 mm. long, pilose.
