Characteristics

Perennial, rosulate, with a slender horizontal rhizome. Leaves numerous, more or less prostrate, up to c. 200 x 45 mm, margin crenate, base cuneate, decurrent on short petiole, light green, both surfaces pilose. Inflorescences several, from base of petiole, usually 1-or 2-flowered, but up to 5. Peduncles up to 100 mm long; pedicels c. 10-15 mm long, both green, pilose. Bracts small, reddish, pilose. Calyx divided to the base into 5 linear segments, 4-5 x 1-1.5 mm, green to reddish, pubescent. Corolla c. 28-35 mm long, pubescent outside, glabrous inside except fora few jointed hairs on the roof of the tube in the mouth, tube and limb pale to medium violet, floor of tube white, sometimes striped yellow, with7 deep violet stripes extending briefly onto base of lower lip which is white; tube subcylindric, widening very slightly upwards, almost straight, c. 16-20 mm long, c. 4 mm in diam. at base; limb-very slightly oblique, almost regular, upper lip of 2 suborbicular lobes, c. 7-10 mm long, lower lip c. 16-20 mm long, lobes suborbicular, 9-10 x 10-14 mm. Stamens arising in lower third of corolla tube, filaments c. 7 mm long, slightly twisted, deep violet, glabrous, anther lobes 1.5 mm long, pale violet, glabrous; lateral staminodes conspicuous. Ovary 6-10 mm long, appressed-pubescent; style 6-10 mm long, dorsoventrally compressed, pubescent with acute and occasional gland-tipped hairs; stigma of 2 almost equal lips offset upon the style. Capsule 35-57 mm long, c. 2 mm in diam. Seeds0.8-1 mm long, reticulate.
