Characteristics

Perennial, rosulate, with a stout horizontal rhizome. Leaves numerous, strap-shaped, suberect, up to 450 x 70 mm, pilose, green above, paler below, margin crenate, base cuneate, decurrent on petiole, petiole up to50 x 7 mm; petiolode up to 15 x 7 mm. Inflorescences from apex of petiolode, up to 20-flowered, many flowers open together. Peduncles up to 250 mm; pedicels 7-17 mm long, both pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Bracts elliptic, up to 3 x 1 mm, Calyx divided to the base into 5 lanceolate lobes, 3-4 x 1 mm. Corolla 20-30 mm long, glandular-pilose outside with occasional acute hairs, almost glabrous inside except for a palate of long, gland-tipped hairs on the roof of the mouth and minute unicellular hairs on the floor of the tube, white, sometimes suffused palest violet, with a yellow Stripe on the floor of the tube and usually patterned in the throat with 3-7 violet streaks extending out onto the lower lip; tube straight, 13-18 mm long, 3-4 mm in diam. at base, c.10 mm across throat; limb slightly oblique, upper lip of 2 erect elliptic-oblong lobes, c. 4-7 x 4-6 mm; lower lip porrect, c. 7-11 mm long, lobes elliptic-oblong, 5-8 x 4-7 mm. Stamens arising in lower third of corolla tube, filaments 4-7 mm long, white or pale more rarely deep violet, twisted, curved and thickened below the anthers, glandular; anther lobes 1.5 mm long, white or violet. Ovary 6 mm long, pubescent, eglandular; style 5-8 mm long, dorsoventrally compressed, pubescent or glandular-pubescent; stigma of 2 unequal, papillose lips. Capsule 37-61 mm long, 2.5 mm in diam., apiculate.

Inflorescence up to 20 flowered, peduncle up to 300 mm tall, pilose. Sepals linear-lanceolate, 5-8 x 1 mm, pilose, tips red-brown. Corolla 20-35 mm long, widely funnel-shaped; tube 13-25 mm long, white or soft pink, yellow stripe on floor, cylindrical, 7-15 mm at throat, outside glandular pubescent, inside very sparsely set with short-stalked glands, roof with few eglandular trichomes at mouth; limb weakly bilabiate, lobes suborbicular or elongate, porrect or spreading, white or soft pink, lower three lobes with 7 dark lines extending onto the limb or with dark stippling. Stamens 4-9 mm long; filaments white, glabrous basally, glandular distally; anthers 1.5-2 x 1 mm, white or deep purple; posterior staminode minute, lateral staminodes c. 1.5 mm long. Pollen prolate, 20-12 pm, tricolpate, exine microreticulate and minutely scabrate. Ovary c. 6-8 mm long, with dense, appressed, filiform trichomes; disc white, style 5-8 mm long, dorsiventrally compressed, with stalked, glandular trichomes distally; stigma stomatomorphic, bilabiate, elliptical, papillate. Fruit up to 55 x 1.5 mm.
