Characteristics

Stemless, perennial herb. Leaves up to 5, prostrate, up to 130 x 55 mm, margin minutely crenate, base cuneate to cordate, apex withered, medium green above, paler below and veins sometimes tinted purple, both surfaces silky-pilose. Inflorescences 20-40-flowered, two or three in succession from apex of very short stalk, all parts densely glandular-pilose. Peduncles up to 100 mm long, relatively stout, green. Bracts elliptic, up to 10 x 2mm, green. Pedicels up to 8 mm long, green. Calyx divided to the base into 5 lanceolate segments, c. 4-5 x 1 mm. Corolla 9-10 mm long, tube cylindric, c. 5 mm long, 4 mm in diam., bent downwards and for-wards, white outside, sometimes tinted violet at the base, densely glandular-pilose becoming glabrous towards base, white inside with c. 10reddish-violet stripes on floor of tube, glabrous except for 2 patches of long, unicellular obtuse hairs on roof; limb oblique, upper lip of 2elliptic lobes, c. 2 x 1.5 mm, erect, lower lip c. 4 mm long, lobes elliptic, c. 2.5 x 2 mm, all lobes white, glabrous inside, glandular-pilose outside. Stamens arising in lower third of corolla tube; filaments 2.5 mm long, white tinted reddish-violet near apex, twisted, glabrous; anther lobes1.5 mm long, white; staminodes 3, minute. Ovary pyramidal, c. 2 mm long, green, pilose with acute, upward-pointing hairs; style 2 mm long, glabrous, terete but slightly flattened at the tip which is bent over, curving up over the anthers to protrude from the corolla mouth; stigma at first appearing truncate but becoming equally 2-lipped with age, papillose. Capsule c. 6 x 4 mm with a prominent apiculus derived from the persistent style base. Seeds 0.5 mm long, verruculose.
