Characteristics

Monocarpic or perennial. Leaves 1-3, up to 240 x 170 mm, pilose with appressed hairs, upper surface light green to grey-green, lower some-times suffused reddish-purple, margin crenate, base cordate. Inflorescences from base of midrib, up to 36-flowered, few flowers open together. Peduncles up to 250 mm long, usually much shorter; pedicels c. 8-20 mm long, both pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Bracts linear, up to 3 x 1 mm. Calyx divided to the base into 5 linear-lanceolate segments,2.5-5 x 0.5-1 mm. Corolla c. 15-45 mm long, pilose with or without gland-tipped hairs outside, glandular towards throat inside; tube c. 10-1  long, 2-3 mm in diam., pale violet (greenish-white in subsp. comptonii), cylindric, sharply deflexed then directed forwards, mouth laterally com-pressed; limb flat, oblique, more conspicuous than the tube, lateral sinuses very narrow, usually pale to medium violet with a characteristic chalkiness underlying the colour, no colour patterning, white, greenish or yellow in throat, upper lobes divergent, elliptic-oblong to orbicular, 3-15 x 2.5-12 mm, lower lip 7-25 x 10-45 mm, lobes elliptic to orbicular, 4-17 x 2.5-14mm. Stamens arising about half-way up corolla tube, filaments 2.5-4 mm long, curved and slightly thickened about the curve, white, pubescent or glabrous; anther lobes 1 mm long, white or violet. Ovary 4-7 mm long, pubescent or glandular-pubescent; style terete, c. 2 mm long, pubescent; stigma truncate to subcapitate. Capsule 15-65 mm long, 2-2.5 mm in diam.
