Characteristics

Perennial. Leaf sometimes solitary, but 1 or 2 additional leaves usually develop from a short relatively stout stock at the base of the flowering leaf and lie in the same plane; blade up to 300 x 180 mm, very dark green above, rich purple-red below, sparsely pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs, margin crenate, base cuneate to rounded. Inflorescences few-flowered (c. 24), several flowers on each open together. Peduncles up to 260 mm; pedicels 12-30 mm, both reddish-brown, sparsely pilose. Calyx divided to the base into 5 linear segments 3 x 1 mm. Corolla 30-43 mm long, sparsely pilose outside, glabrous inside except for glandular pubescence mainly on roof of mouth; tube slightly curved, narrowly cylindric below, ventricose on the lower side towards the mouth, 16-26 mm long, c. 10 mm across mouth, violet with a white patch below near mouth; upper lip of two suborbicular lobes, 5-8 x 5-7 mm, lower lip 13-17 mm long, 22-25 mm across, lobes oblong-elliptic, 8-10 x 6-7 mm, all lobes violet patterned with white wedges, the median wedges extending along the floor of the tube, and separated by deep violet streaks. Stamens arising in upper third of corolla tube, c. 5 mm long, curved, curve dilated, violet, glandular; anther lobes 1.5 mm long, pale violet. Ovary c. 12 mm long, minutely pubescent with acute, upward-pointing hairs and short-stalked patent glands; style terete, 8-12 mm long, sparsely pubescent; stigma stomatomorphic. Capsule 40-66(48 ± 7) mm long. Seeds 0.8-1.2 mm long, reticulate.
