Characteristics

Perennial, rosulate, with a stout horizontal rhizome. Leaves up to450 x 110 mm, base cuneate, decurrent on petiole up to 50 x 8 mm, pilose; petiolode up to 15 x 8 mm. Inflorescences from top of petiolode, usually 1-or 2-flowered, occasionally up to 4-flowered. Peduncle up to250 mm; pedicel 10-20 mm, both pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Bracts narrowly elliptic, up to 5 x 1 mm, pilose. Calyx segments linear to lanceolate, 8 x 1.5 mm, pilose. Corolla 65-105 mm; tube narrowly infundibuliform, 45-55 mm long, 5-6 mm diam. near base, throat 13-1  diam., slightly dilated both above and below in the throat, pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs outside, glabrous inside except for a beard of multicellular hairs on the roof near the mouth; lower lip 20-3  long; all lobes broadly elliptic to suborbicular, 15-22 x 13-20 mm, sparsely pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Stamens arising about two-thirds up corolla tube; filaments c. 10 mm long, twisted about the middle, purple to white, sparsely glandular; anther lobes 2-3 mm long, violet at maturity; posterior staminode minute, laterals 2-3 mm. Ovary25 mm long, pubescent or glandular-pubescent, passing into the 16 mm long white glandular-pubescent style; stigma white, unequally two-lipped. Capsule 70-180 mm, c. 2.2 mm diam. Seeds 0.5-0.9 mm long, reticulate.

Calyx 8.0 x 1.5 mm, pilose. Corolla 65-105 mm long; tube narrowly funnel-shaped; tube pale bluish violet outside; floor of tube and base of flower lip deep violet, marked with 5 reddish purple lines running into tube; base of flower lip with reddish flush; lobes pale bluish violet inside, whitish outside. Stamens arising 2/3 up tube, purple to white, ± 10 mm long. Ovary 25 mm long. Flowering time Dec.-Apr. Fruit a capsule, 70-180 x 2.2 mm. Seed 0.6-0.9 mm long.
