Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Gesneriaceae > Streptocarpus

Characteristics

Monocarpic. Leaf 1, lamina 15-65 x 10-50 mm, margin slightly serrate, base cuneate to subcordate, green above, sometimes reddish below, pilose on both surfaces, stalk (petiolode) occasionally conspicuous, up to10 mm long; sometimes a second phyllomorph is developed from the petiolode. Inflorescences usually 1, but up to 4, at junction of blade and stalk, 2-9-flowered (up to 20-flowered in cultivated specimens). Peduncles up to c. 50 mm long; pedicels 5-15 mm long, both pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Bracts minute. Calyx divided to the base into 5linear-lanceolate segments, c. 5 x 1 mm. Corolla c. 10-12 mm long, white, sparsely glandular-pubescent outside, glabrous inside except for a beard of unicellular or two-celled hairs on the roof; tube cylindric, bulbous at base, curved slightly downwards and upwards, 8 mm long, 3 mm diam., c. 4 mm across mouth; limb almost regular, scarcely oblique, upper lip of 2 suborbicular lobes, c. 3 x 3 mm, reflexed; lower lip of 3 suborbicular lobes, c. 3 x 3 mm. Stamens inserted in lower third of corolla tube, filaments c. 4 mm long, curved, glabrous; anther lobes 1 mm long; lateral staminodes conspicuous. Ovary 2.5-3 mm long, pubescent with eglandular and occasional glandular hairs; style c. 3.5 mm long, dorsoventrally compressed, pubescent, sparsely glandular, bent over at the tip; stigma of 2equal lips offset upon the style so that the anterior lip projects and the stigma is asymmetrical in profile. Capsule 7-11(9 ± 1) mm long, 2 mm in diam., prominently apiculate. Seeds 0.4-0.5 mm long, reticulate.
