Characteristics

Monocarpic or sometimes perennial. Leaf usually 1, up to 250 x 180 mm, margin crenate, base cordate to cuneate, upper surface light green, pilose, lower paler, pubescent. Inflorescences from base of midrib, up to25-flowered, many flowers open together. Peduncles up to 250 mm; pedicels c. 10-20 mm long, both pilose. Bracts lanceolate, up to 7 x 3 mm. Calyx divided to the base into 5 linear-lanceolate segments, 5-7 x 1 mm. Corolla honey-scented, up to 38 mm long, pubescent, eglandular outside, glabrous inside on floor of tube, minute unicellular hairs on roof of tube and inside of upper lip, the hairs becoming progressively smaller until at the apex of the lip they are no more than mamillate cells, white occasion-ally suffused palest blue-violet with a yellow stripe streaked and spotted violet-blue on the floor of the tube and the base of the lower lip; tube subcylindric, straight, c. 25 mm long, c. 10 mm across mouth, limb slightly oblique, upper lip of 2 elliptic-oblong, erect lobes, 9 x 8 mm, lower lip porrect, c. 15 mm long, lobes elliptic-oblong, 8 x 7 mm. Stamens arising in lower third of corolla tube, filaments conspicuously toothed at junction with connective, c. 9 mm long, white, curved, curve dilated, sparsely glandular; anther lobes 1.5 mm long, white; lateral staminodes conspicuous. Ovary 8 mm long, pubescent, eglandular; style dorsoventrally compressed, sharply bent over at tip, 7 mm long, pubescent in lower half; stigma of 2 unequal, papillose lips, asymmetrical in profile. Capsule50-90(64 ± 9) mm long, 2 mm in diam., apiculate. Seeds 0.6-0.7 mm long, reticulate.
