Characteristics

Erect perennials. Leaf-blades linear to narrowly elliptic, finely acuminate, narrowed into a short false petiole, the nerves parallel to the midrib and transversely connected. Raceme erect, linear, secund. Spikelets linear or narrowly oblong, subterete, 4–7-flowered, the lower 2–4 hermaphrodite, the upper shorter and barren; glumes persistent, unequal, shorter than the spikelet; lemmas at length rigidly coriaceous and terete, with a terminal awn; palea ± as long as the lemma; lodicules linear to oblong; stamens 2; stigmas long-exserted from the spikelet and tangled.
