Characteristics

Stem erect, simple or branched, with a double indumentum of very short, thin, white, somewhat crisped or curved subappressed antrorse hairs and of yellowish or golden-yellow, up to 5 mm. long, patent, more or less dense setae, some of these, towards the upper part of the stem as well as on the raceme-axes and pedicels, with a very swollen vesicular, yellow base.

Leaves all similar, 5–15 × 0·3–4 cm., oblong-lanceolate or elliptic to narrowly lanceolate or narrowly elliptic, attenuate towards the acute apex (the uppermost with the apex nearly caudate), serrulate, the teeth somewhat scattered and mucronulate, cuneate at the base, membranous, pubescent and setiferous, more densely so on the nerves; petiole up to 2 mm. long.
Calyx-tube 7·5–13 mm. long, with vesiculose setae on the outside and hairy within in the lower 2–3 mm.; lobes (2·5)4–6 mm. long, oblong-lanceolate, acute.
Stamens with filaments 10–12 mm. long in the brevistylous flowers and 5–6 mm. long in the longistylous ones; anthers c. 1·5 mm. long.
Ovary ovoid, vesiculose-setose; styles 3 mm. long in the brevistylous flowers or 10 mm. long in the longistylous ones.
Seeds 2·5–3 mm. long, rather arcuate, finally blackish; aril longer than 1/2 of the seed, sinuate at the margin.
Capsule elliptic-ovoid (5–6 × 3–4 mm.), or subspheric (4 × 4 mm.), setose, the setae bulbous.
Racemes 10–25 cm. long, 6–15-flowered; pedicels thick, up to 4 mm. long in fruit.
Petals 8–14 × 8–10 mm., obovate, unguiculate, pale yellow or lemon-yellow.
Annual (or also perennial?) herb, 20–70 cm. high.
