Characteristics

Twining rambler or climber. Leaves alternate, prominently petiolate, exstipulate. Flowers bisexual, axillary, solitary or sometimes paired on long peduncles, with several bracts near base. Perianth cyclic. Sepals 5, imbricate, persistent. Petals 5, much larger than sepals, caducous. Extra-staminal disc absent. Stamens numerous; filaments filiform, longer than the anthers; anthers basifixed, apiculate. Ovary superior, sessile, 1-locular, tapering to a thick style; ovules numerous; style and capitate stigma persistent in fruit. Fruit a berry, many-seeded, surrounded at base by persistent sepals. Seeds embedded in a scanty pulp.
