Characteristics

Twining rambler or climber, ± glabrous. Leaves alternate, simple: lamina broadly ovate or ovate-elliptic to ± circular, 5–12 cm long, 3–10 (–12) cm wide, rounded to slightly cordate base, entire margin, acute to abruptly acuminate apex, rarely obtuse, subcoriaceous or ± soft, green both surfaces (glossy above, slightly paler and dull beneath), glabrous, 3-veined from base (basal pair of secondary veins often more prominent in basal c. half of lamina), domatia absent; petiole 2–7 cm long. Peduncles (1.5–) 2–3 cm long. Flowers solitary in axils of leaves (sometimes in pairs), bisexual; sepals 5, triangular-ovate, c. 2 mm long, persistent; petals 5, ovate, 5–7 mm long, 3–3.5 mm wide, truncate at base, obtuse at apex, pale pink to cream, caducous; disc absent; stamens numerous (c. 70), filaments filiform, 2–2.5 mm long (Jessup 1982; 4–7 mm given by Harden 1990), distinctly longer than anthers, anthers 1.5–2 mm long, straight; connective inconspicuous except for terminal lobe; ovary elongate-ovoid, c. 3 mm long, tapering to a style c. 1 mm long (Jessup 1982; 2.5 mm given in Harden 1990); stigma capitate. Berry ellipsoidal to subglobular, (13–) 20–25 mm long, red maturing black, base surrounded by persistent sepals. Seeds 20–25, ovoid to globular, angular, c. 3 mm long, embedded in scanty pulp.
