Characteristics

Annuals, 15-45 cm tall. Stems erect, subquadrangular, simple, rarely apically branched, hispidulous. Leaves sessile, linear, 1.5-3.5 cm X 1-2 mm, lower ones smaller, scabrous hairy. Spikes 3-to numerous flowered, 3-15 cm; bracts similar to leaves in shape and size. Pedicel less than 2 mm. Bracteoles less that 1 mm, linear. Calyx 9-10 mm, 15-ribbed, hispidulous along ribs; lobes almost as long as tube, subulate. Corolla white, 1.2-1.5 cm; tube ca. 2 cm X 1 mm, apically curved forward; limb 4-6 mm; lower lip lobes 4-6 X 3-4 mm. Capsule obovoid-oblong, ca. 4.5 X 3 mm. Seeds brown, minute. Fl. Sep-Dec.

Corolla white or cream with greenish tube, pubescent outside; tube abruptly curved just above calyx teeth, inflated above; upper lip obovate, emarginate or truncate; lobes of lower lip 6–8 x 5 mm., obovate, rounded.
Flowers axillary, solitary, alternate, forming long lax terminal spikes; lower bracts leaf-like, the upper linear to subulate; bracteoles c. 4 mm. long, subulate.
Erect annual or biennial herb 15–50 cm. high, usually simple or erect-branched, stems stiff, ± pubescent to densely covered with very short hispid hairs.
Calyx 10–12 mm. long, tubular, very prominently 15-ribbed, 5-toothed, finely pubescent; teeth 3–5 mm. long, linear-lanceolate, elongating in fruit.
Leaves opposite to nearly so, alternate above, linear to linear-lanceolate, 1–4 mm. wide, acute, finely pubescent.
Capsule ovoid, shorter than calyx, apiculate, valves sharply recurved after dehiscence.
