Leaves opposite, 3–11 x 6–17 mm., linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, stiff, 3-nerved, nerves deeply impressed, margin coarsely toothed, roughly scabrid.
Coarse erect herb 50–100 cm. or more high, branched in upper part or simple, stems rounded-quadrangular, roughly hairy.
Inflorescence very dense, terminal spike, 3–10 cm. long or up to 15 cm. long in fruit, closely glandular-hairy.
Capsules 8 x 4 mm., closely arranged, styles persistent.
Robust herb 2-5 ft. sparingly branched above
Bracteoles broadly ovate, 4–6 mm. long.
Calyx 5-toothed, 10-nerved.
Flowers white, tube green
Drying dark brown.
