Characteristics

Calyx in flower c. 8 mm. long, 15 mm. in diam.; enlarging in fruit, subulate teeth up to half as long as the tube; lower portion connivent, upper spreading in fruit, nerves scabrid, hyaline between nerves.

Corolla cream-white or pale yellow, 10–17 mm. long, finely glandular-pubescent outside, throat hairy. Upper lobe emarginate or bilobed, 2–5 x 2–4 mm., reflexed, lower lobes spreading 2–7 x 1.5–4 mm.
Plant annual 10–40 cm. tall, simple or branched, stems somewhat succulent, scabrid, slightly quadrangular.
Flowers opposite or alternate, only two flowers at same node open per inflorescence branch.
Flowers creamy-white to pale yellow with pink centre, rarely wholly pale pink (Lely 532)
Bracts much larger than leaves, up to 5 x 4 mm., of ten recurved.
Leaves few on lower half of stem, c. 10 x 1 mm.
Bracteoles subulate, shorter than calyx tube.
Erect slightly scabrid herb, 4-18 in. high
Capsule ovoid, 8–13x2 mm.
