Characteristics

Trees. Leaves petiolate, alternate, entire, coriaceous; veins prominent beneath, tertiary veins ± parallel to one another (as also in Strombosia). Inflorescence axillary, with the flowers borne on short lateral shoots, spike-like. Flowers hermaphrodite, 4–5-merous, sessile or very shortly pedicellate. Calyx cupuliform, slightly lobed, non-accrescent. Petals free, lanceolate-oblong to lanceolate, caducous, apiculate. Stamens 4–5, opposite and equal in number to petals; filaments minute, adnate to petals; anthers dithecous, elongated, introrse. Disk annular, small. Ovary ± submerged in receptacle, 3(–4–5)-locular, basally lobed; lobes episepalous; ovules 1 per locule, pendent, anatropous; stigma short, 3(–4–5)-lobed. Fruit a drupe.
