Leaves petiolate; petiole 1–5 mm. long, lamina dark green above, silvery or yellowish beneath, ovate, 1–1·4 (in young leaves up to 2·5) times as long as wide, in mature leaves 6–17 x 5–12 cm., rounded or subcordate at the base, acuminate at the apex (acumen 1–5 mm. long), papyraceous or chartaceous, puberulous above, especially on the midrib and secondary veins, tomentellous beneath with 8–11 pairs of secondary veins, tertiary venation in older leaves, conspicuous beneath.

Corolla tube 18–24 mm. long and widening at 3/5-4/5 of its length into a cyathiform upper part, at the mouth 11–14 mm. wide, densely short-pubescent outside and glabrous inside; corona lobes lingulate or subulate, 1·5–3 x 1–1·5 mm. glabrous; corolla lobes ovate, 6–10 x 6–9 mm., gradually or abruptly narrowing into the pendulous tails; lobes (including the tails) 100–150 mm. long, puberulous or pubescent outside.
Follicles divergent at an angle of 170–180°, tapering towards a narrow apex and ending in a knob, 19–40 cm. long and 1·5–2·5 cm. in diam.; exocarp thick and hard, with a few or rather many small protuberances, puberulous or short-pubescent, fairly densely lenticellate, lenticels fairly elongate.
Inflorescence on long or short branches or axillary, (1)2–9-flowered, sessile or pedunculate, lax or congested, densely pubescent in all parts; pedicels 3–6 mm. long; bracts sepal-like.
Seeds with the grain 14–17 x 3–4 mm., densely pubescent; rostrum glabrous for 37–64 mm. and bearing a coma for 18–37 mm.; coma erect spreading, 45–75 mm. long.
Stamens 0–3 mm. exserted; filaments 4–5 mm. long, straight; anthers 5·2–6·9 x 1·5–2 mm. glabrous; acumen 0·2–0·6 mm. long.
Ovary 1·4–1·8 x 2 mm., densely hispid with erect hairs; style 13–16 mm. long; clavuncula 2 x 2 mm.; stigma minute.
Liana, up to 9 m. long, deciduous, flowers appearing before or with the leaves.
Sepals subequal, ovate or narrowly elliptic, 10–17 x 3–6·5 mm., acute.
