Characteristics

Leaves petiolate; petiole 2–7·5 mm. long; lamina circular, elliptic, ovate, or obovate, 0·9–2 times as long as wide (in young leaves up to 3 times as long as wide), 1·7–8 x 1·3–5(8·5) cm., cuneate, rounded or subcordate at the base, slightly emarginate, rounded, or acute at the apex (rarely with an acumen up to 3 mm. long), papyraceous or thinly coriaceous, densely short-pubescent or tomentellous above, especially on the midrib and veins, and tomentose beneath with whitish hairs, with 4–8 pairs of secondary veins; tertiary venation inconspicuous.

Corolla tube 14–22 mm. long and widening at slightly less than 1/2-2/3 of its length into a more or less shallowly cyathiform upper part, at the mouth 7–14 mm. wide, densely short-tomentellous or pubescent outside, glabrous inside; corona lobes triangular, 0·6–2 x 1–1·8 mm., minutely papillose; corolla lobes ovate, 6–12 x 5·5–11 mm., fairly abruptly narrowing into the spreading or pendulous tail; lobes (including the tail) 22–57 mm. long, densely short-pubescent or tomentellous outside, glabrous inside.
A shrub. It grows 1-4 m tall. It can be a creeper. It loses its leaves during the year. The flowers appear the same time as the leaves. The small branches have a grey coating. The leaves are opposite and they can be round or oval. They are 2-8 cm long and 1-9 cm wide. The base is wedge shaped. The flowers are in groups of 1-6. The fruit are brown and cylinder shaped. They are 12-23 cm long by 2 cm wide. The seeds are 8-13 cm long and hairy.
Follicles divergent at an angle of 180–200°, tapering towards the apex and ending in a small knob, 12·5–23 cm. long and 2 cm. in diameter; exocarp chocolate-brown, thick and hard, short-pubescent or glabrescent, sparsely or densely lenticellate.
Inflorescence 1–6-flowered, pedunculate, congested and sometimes partly reduced, densely tomentellous in all parts; pedicels 4–15 mm., long; bracts sepal-like.
Stamens from 3 mm. exserted to 0·4 mm. included; filaments straight, 2·3–4·5 mm. long; anthers 4·3–5·3 x 0·7–1·8 mm., glabrous; acumen 0–0·2 mm. long.
Seeds with the grain 8–12·5 x 2·8–3·2 mm., densely pubescent; rostrum glabrous for 15–30 mm. and bearing a coma for 12–33 mm.; coma 32–53 mm. long.
Sepals subequal, reddish-brown, elliptic, broadly elliptic, or obovate, 5·5–12·5 x 2–9 mm., acute, densely tomentellous.
Ovary 1–1·3 x 1·5–2·5 mm. densely pubescent; style 9–14·5 mm. long; clavuncula 1·3–2·2 x 1·3–2·2 mm.; stigma minute.
Shrub, 1–4 m. high, rarely a liana; deciduous, the flowers appearing together with the leaves; latex white.
