Characteristics

Shrub 1–3 m high, densely branched, occasionally with lianescent branches to 4.5 m high; deciduous, the flowers appearing before or with the leaves; branches brown, lenticellate; branchlets densely puberulous; latex amber.. Leaves opposite, subsessile or with a petiole to 3 mm long, blade narrowly elliptic, 0.8–3.6 cm long, 0.3–1.4 cm wide, base cuneate, margins undulate, apex obtuse or rounded, glabrous but for the hispidulous midrib and margins.. Inflorescence on branches or on short-shoots, 1(–3)-flowered, all parts densely puberulous; pedicels 1–8 mm long.. Flowers with sepals erect or spreading, elliptic to narrowly obovate, 6–15 mm long; corolla white suffused with pink and turning yellow, the tube 6–13 mm long, corolla lobes ovate, 4–8 mm long, 3–6 mm wide, narrowing into the 4–8 cm long tails, corona lobes yellow and red or chocolate brown-spotted, 2.5–6.5 mm long.. Fruit brown to purplish brown, the mericarps opposite-divergent, ± cylindrical, 16–32 cm long, 1–2 cm in diameter, tapering and ending in a small knob, sulcate, lenticellate, glabrous; seeds 9–21 mm long, densely pubescent, with a stalked coma 7–18 cm long.
