Characteristics

Loosely caespitose perennial, sometimes shortly rhizomatous, rather few-leaved, usually with a knotty rootstock. Culms 40–150 cm high, occasionally producing clusters of shoots from nodes; mid-culm internodes glabrous. Young shoots extravaginal. Leaves scattered along culms; basal sheaths with margins free, glabrous or minutely papillose; ligule 2–4.5 mm long, truncate or lacerate, apically glabrous, abaxially glabrous or sparsely hairy; blade flat, 16–40 cm long, (4–) 7–17 mm wide, thin, with midrib usually excentric, glabrous or minutely scabrous on both surfaces. Panicles open, 12–35 cm long. Spikelets 3–6.5 mm long, with 1–6 bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume 1.9–2.3 mm long, 1–3-nerved, with lateral nerves often obscure; upper glume 1.7–2.7 mm long, 3-nerved. Web absent. Lemma 2.3–3.2 mm long, very prominently 5-nerved, papillose to scabrous overall, shortly pilose at very base. Anthers 1–1.8 mm long.
