Shrubs or small trees. Leaves paired, distinctly shortly petiolate, the blades with hairy domatia beneath; stipules connate into a sheath, broadly triangular or ovate at the base, drawn out into a short acumen. Flowers hermaphrodite, axillary, solitary, borne from the upper nodes of the congested leafy shoots, on quite long pedicels; buds obtuse or bluntly apiculate. Calyx-tube obconic, the limb very short, truncate or slightly erose. Corolla-tube ± cylindrical, straight or slightly curved, glabrous within; lobes 5, oblong-triangular, acute and shortly apiculate, papillate inside. Stamens 5, the anthers oblong, partly exserted; filaments very short. Ovary 3–4-locular; style relatively slender; stigmatic club continuous with style (i.e. latter not fitting into hollowed base of the club), obconic, prominently 3–4-lobed at the apex. Fruit a subglobose drupe with (2–)3–4 pyrenes developed, often 2–4-lobed when dry.
