Characteristics

Perennial climber, usually robust and several m. long.. Stems branched and twisted, either angular and densely covered with ferruginous hairs, particularly on the angles, but often with shorter hairs on the faces, or almost terete and glabrescent.. Leaflets paler beneath, obovate, rhomboid or elliptic, 3·3–13·5 cm. long, 1·7–9 cm. wide, rounded, emarginate or acuminate at the apex, acute, rounded or truncate at the base, glabrescent to finely pubescent above, finely to densely silvery or greyish hairy beneath; petioles 5–23 cm. long; rhachis 0·5–1·7 cm. long; petiolules 3–7 mm. long; stipules 3 mm. long.. Inflorescences densely ferruginous, 6–24 cm. long above a peduncle 3–10 cm. long; pedicels 1·5–3 mm. long; bracts and bracteoles 1 mm. long.. Calyx covered with adpressed ferruginous hairs; tube 1·5–2 mm. long, usually but not always less hairy than the lobes or even glabrescent; lobes ovate-lanceolate, 1·5–2·5 mm. long, the upper pair joined, save at the extreme apex, to form a notched lobe.. Standard orange, vermilion or purplish-blue, obovate, 3·5–6 mm. long, 2–4 mm. wide.. Pods linear, 3–4·6 cm. long, 3–4 mm. wide, densely covered with whitish or ferruginous silky hairs; beak 2–4 mm. long.. Seeds brown, oblong, compressed, smooth, longest dimension 2·5–3·5 mm., shorter dimension 1·8–2·5 mm., thickness 1·5–2 mm.; rim-aril present.
