Annual. Leaf-blades narrow; ligule a ciliate rim. Inflorescence dense, cylindrical, spike-like, the spikelets borne in pairs, the pairs sessile and falling entire at maturity. Spikelets all alike; glumes similar, bristle-like, forming an involucre about the pair of florets; lemma much shorter than the glumes, coriaceous, 3-nerved, keeled and slightly gibbous on the back, terminating in a fine straight awn; palea as long as the lemma, coriaceous; stamens 3. Caryopsis subtriquetrous.
