Characteristics

Prostrate, annual, succulent herb, papillose on leaves and stems and with vesicular hairs on young growth. Leaves alternate, usually ovate or rhomboid, with midvein visible below. 1–5 cm long, 3–20 mm wide, narrowing to petiole 5–20 mm long, densely papillose or crystalline. Flowers solitary, sessile. Perianth segments 4, lanceolate, c. 3 mm long, papillose outside, yellow inside. Stamens 12–20. Ovary densely papillose; styles 3–8, filiform, c. 3 mm long. Fruit top-shaped, 15 mm long, 10 mm broad, densely papillose, purplish, bony, dry, usually with 4 wings extending above fruit but without horns, cuneate at base, with a number of convoluted ridges between wings. Seeds 3–8, pear-shaped, pale brown.
