Spikelets 5–8-flowered, all florets awned, the lower 3–5 florets fertile; glumes ovate-lanceolate, acuminate or mucronate, the lower 2–3.5 mm. long, the upper 3–5 mm. long; lowest lemma ovate-elliptic, 2.5–3 mm. long, ciliate on the lateral nerves and keel, shortly ciliate on the flanks, 2-toothed at the apex, with an awn 5–9 mm. long; upper 2–3 florets sterile and reduced to glabrous lemmas..
