Characteristics

Plants rhizomatous, decumbent or ascending and climbing over and through supporting vegetation. Culms to 6 m long, entangled and forming an impenetrable thicket to 4 m high, usually glabrous. Leaves: ligule 0.1–0.2 mm long, ciliolate to ciliate; blade flat, 1–13 cm long, 1–7 mm wide, usually abaxially scabrous. Raceme 1.5–5 cm long; rachis scabrous to puberulous. Spikelets subsessile, 3–6 mm long. Glumes subequal to unequal, with longer one c. 1/2 length of remainder of spikelet; lower glume 2–3 mm long, weakly keeled or dorsally rounded, 3 (–5)-nerved; upper glume 2.1–3.3 mm long, broadly acute to obtuse, 5 or 7-nerved. Sterile florets: lemmas obtuse to truncate, muticous, with nerves distinctly raised, glabrous; upper lemma 4–5.4 mm long. Bisexual floret: lemma 3.8–5.2 mm long, 7-nerved, glabrous; stamens 4; anthers 2.5 mm long.
