Characteristics

Plants rhizomatous, erect. Culms 5–30 cm high, glabrous. Leaves: ligule 0.2–1.2 mm long, unfringed or ciliolate; blade flat or involute, 1–8 cm long, 0.5–1.7 mm wide, abaxially glabrous, discolorous. Inflorescences racemose or paniculate, 0.7–3 cm long; rachis scabrous. Spikelets subsessile or pedicellate, 4–6.5 mm long. Glumes subequal or unequal, 1/5–1/3 length of remainder of spikelet; lower glume 0.7–1.8 mm long, keeled or dorsally rounded, 1-nerved; upper glume 1.4–2.4 mm long, obtuse, 1 or 3-nerved. Sterile florets: lemmas acute to obtuse, muticous or mucronate, with nerves obscure, glabrous; upper lemma 3.4–5.8 mm long. Bisexual floret: lemma 2.7–3.8 mm long, 3–5-nerved, glabrous; stamens 2 (occasionally 1).
