Characteristics

Plants rhizomatous, erect or geniculate to ascending, sometimes scrambling. Culms 6–60 (–130) cm high, glabrous. Leaves: ligule 0.3–0.5 mm long, usually ciliolate but sometimes with a few hairs c. 1 mm long; blade tightly involute, 2–7 cm long, 0.3–0.8 mm wide, abaxially glabrous, discolourous. Raceme 0.5–3 cm long; rachis glabrous. Spikelets shortly pedicellate, 4.6–6.8 mm long. Glumes unequal, 1/4–1/5 length of remainder of spikelet; lower glume 1.1–1.5 mm long, keeled, 1 (–3)-nerved; upper glume 1.7–2 mm long, obtuse to truncate, 3-nerved. Sterile florets: lemmas rounded to truncate, muticous, with nerves distinctly raised, glabrous; upper lemma 4.4–5.5 mm long. Bisexual floret: lemma 4.3–5.5 mm long, 7-nerved, scaberulous; stamens 4.
