Leaf ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 50–150 × 20–35 mm, bright green to yellowish green. Flower stem 100–550 × 3–5 mm, green, 2–15-flowered. Sterile bracts usually 2, sometimes 3. Flowers 25–40 mm across, internally yellow or greenish yellow with numerous reddish brown to dark brown spots, blotches and suffusions (occasionally wholly yellow to greenish yellow), externally dull greenish brown. Sepals and petals 10–20 × 4–8 mm, labellum narrowest. Column 6–9 × 4–6 mm, yellow or greenish with reddish brown spots, very broadly winged, wings spreading like a mantle, yellow, spotted, deeply fringed or toothed (teeth to 1.7 mm long); dorsal surface of post-anther lobe covered with a dense mass of orange, hair-like papillae; supra-anther lobe 1.7–2.5 mm long, rod-like with swollen, clubbed apex; lateral lobes 1–2 mm long, finger-like, yellow. Anther near column base, with a curved, bulbous, beak-like appendage 2.5–3.5 mm long.
Widespread and common; found growing in a range of habitats including open forest, heathy forest, shrubland and heathland in freely draining, sandy soil and clay loam. In W.A., where it is much more common than in eastern states, this species is often found in winter-wet flats or in dense, wet heath over laterite and on the margins of inland granite outcrops.
