Leaf 100–250 × 15–20 mm, deeply channelled, dark green, base red. Flower stem 200–450 × 2–4 mm, 5–20-flowered. Sterile bracts usually 2. Flowers cupped, 15–25 mm across, bright blue with darker streaks and spots, mainly on petals. Sepals and petals 9–12 × 5–7 mm, concave. Labellum similar. Column 5–6 × 3 mm, white or pale blue; post-anther lobe short, broad, dark brown to black with paler, horseshoe-shaped apex, outer surface irregularly grooved; column arms short, horizontal or at slight upward angle; hair-tufts toothbrush-like, dense, white, hairs c. 1 mm long. Anther above middle of column.
Highly restricted; found growing in hills and valleys in montane woodland with tussock grass and shrub ground cover in well-drained, stony loam and rich, fertile loam.
