Characteristics

Leaf 150–300 × 3–12 mm, fleshy, dark green, base purplish. Flower stem 80–600 × 1.3–3.5 mm, 2–12-flowered. Sterile bract usually 1. Flowers 30–46 mm across (rarely as small as 20 mm across), dark blue with darker longitudinal veins, tips and centre sometimes flushed with mauve, exterior similar. Sepals and petals 8–22 × 3–9 mm, concave; labellum narrower than petals. Column 3.5–5.5 × 2–3 mm, base whitish or pale blue, apex dark blue, winged with side flanges; post-anther lobe hooding anther, 1–1.7 × 1.9–3.5 mm, dark purplish black with a white or pink, curved, fleshy, toothed or lobed, wavy apex; auxiliary lobes converging, flat, widest at base then tapered, apex similar to post-anther lobe; column arms obliquely erect, converging, 1.3–2 mm long; hair-tufts mop-like, hairs purple or white, c. 1 mm long. Anther near middle of column.
