Characteristics

Leaf 100–400 × 10–20 mm, thick, fleshy, dark green, base purplish. Flower stem 300–1000 × 4–7 mm, often powdery, 2–30-flowered. Sterile bracts 1 to 3. Flowers 20–40 mm across, pale blue to dark blue with darker streaks, rarely pink or white. Sepals and petals 10–22 × 6–10 mm (labellum narrowest). Column 4–7 × 3–4 mm, white or bluish with yellow apex and broad, blackish apical collar; post-anther lobe short, 3-lobed, yellow-tipped, dorsal surface with a few short, erect, finger-like papillae; auxiliary lobes broad, higher than post-anther lobe; column arms projecting to obliquely erect, often touching, 1.5–2.5 mm long; hair-tufts toothbrush-like, dense, white, hairs c. 1 mm long.

Environment

Widespread from the coast to the foothills and high mountains where it's often locally common in wetter habitats, especially on slopes and ridges in high rainfall forests, including Snow Gum woodland, wet sclerophyll forest and dense, shrubby, open forest; less commonly found in coastal heath. Soils range from moisture-retentive sand to shallow clay loam and deep, rich, well-structured mountain loam.
