Characteristics

Leaf 100–250 × 5–12 mm, fleshy, channelled, dark green with purplish base, ribbed. Flower stem 150–500 × 5–12 mm, 1–12-flowered. Sterile bracts 1 to 3 (usually 2). Flowers 20–35 mm across, dark blue to purplish, rarely white or pinkish, externally mauve or reddish. Sepals and petals 10–18 × 4–6 mm, barely overlapping. Column 5–6.5 × 2.5–3.5 mm, pale bluish or pink; post-anther lobe 3–4 × 1.5–2 mm, hooding anther, dark brown or blackish with conspicuous yellow apex, tubular, inflated, shallowly V-notched; column arms converging, 1–2 mm long; hair-tufts toothbrush-like, usually white, hairs 0.5–1 mm long.
