Leaf 150–500 × 5–12 mm, leathery, ribbed, dark green, base purplish. Flower stem 200–800 × 1.5–5 mm, 2–18-flowered. Sterile bracts usually 2 or 3. Flowers 20–45 mm across, blue to violet, occasionally white or pinkish, externally mauve or reddish, strongly scented. Sepals and petals 8–20 × 4–10 mm, barely overlapping. Column 5–8.5 × 3–5 mm, pale blue or pink; post-anther lobe 3.5–4.6 × 1.5–3 mm, hooding anther, tubular, hardly inflated, dark brown to nearly black with conspicuous yellow apex, shallowly V-notched; column arms converging, 1–2 mm long; hair-tufts toothbrush-like, usually white, dense hairs 0.6–1.2 mm long.
