Characteristics

Leaf 150–500 × 5–15 mm, thin-textured, dark green with purplish base. Flower stem 200–600 × 1.5–3.5 mm, green to purplish, 4–15-flowered. Sterile bracts usually 3. Flowers 20–40 mm across, dark blue to purplish, occasionally white, pinkish or lilac, externally mauve. Sepals and petals 10–20 × 5–10 mm. Column 6–7 × 3–4 mm, pale blue to pinkish; post-anther lobe 3.5–4 × 2–3.5 mm, tan to dark brown with conspicuous yellow apex, hooded, tubular, inflated, V-notched; column arms converging, curved upwards, 1.2–1.7 mm long; hair-tufts mop-like, hairs 1–1.5 mm long, white or pink hairs.

Environment

Locally common; found growing mainly on sheltered slopes and among rocks in open forest, and grassy forest, less commonly along rainforest margins and around the margins of large rock sheets. Soil types include brown loam, stony loam and sandy loam. It also colonises road embankments.
