Plants single or in tufts. Leaf 80–200 × 1–2.5 mm, linear or thread-like, green or purplish. Flower stem often flexuose, 100–400 × 1–2 mm, wiry, reddish to reddish pink, 1–5-flowered. Sterile bracts several. Flowers 18–25 mm across, internally pink to salmon pink, rarely cream, pale yellow or very pale pink, externally brownish pink. Sepals and petals 6–14 × 3–4 mm. Column 4–6 × 2.5 mm, cream to pinkish with black, red or orange collar, lacking hood; post-anther lobe short, broad, erect, brownish with densely and irregularly toothed yellow apex; column arms 0.7–1.2 mm long, broad, flattish, yellow, (rarely with a few yellow hairs), margins with finger-like lobes or blunt teeth. Anther not prominent, cream to yellow, apex minutely papillate.
Locally common in a range of habitats, including open forest, coastal scrub, heathland, grass tree plains and sedgy heath; found growing in range of soils from freely draining sand and loam to moist and seasonally wet, peaty sand.
