Characteristics

A succulent smooth or more usually papillose much-branched annual herb; stems prostrate, ascending or erect, radiating from the crown of the taproot, sometimes tinged reddish, 10–30 cm. or more in length.. Leaves linear to narrowly obovate or oblong-ovate, subsessile, 9–35 mm. long, 1–9 mm. broad; petiole 0–3 mm. long; leaf-base expanded, membranous, with 2 stipular lobes.. Flowers 3–6 mm. long, sessile, axillary, glomerulate, 3–12 or more, rarely solitary, the calyces basally connate and often forming a compact compound subspherical mass in the fruiting state.. Calyx-lobes longer than broad, smooth or papillose, each with a distinct dorsal subapical fleshy mucro 0.5–1.5 mm. long. Calyx-tube obconical, bearing 5 more or less prominent tubercle-like projections at the base of the sinuses between the lobes.. Stamens 5.. Ovary obconical, turbinate, depressed above around the style.. Ovules and seeds 2, sometimes one by abortion of the other.. Fig. 8/8, p. 24.

Branches dichotomous, papillose. Leaves linear, fleshy, mucronate, dilated at base with membranous stipuliform teeth; 1/2-1 in. long, 1/12-1/10 in. broad. Flowers in axillary fascicles or on short lateral leafy shoots, the calyces consolidated below. Calyx-teeth with apiculus, lanceolate acute. Stamens 5 or fewer (?). Style 1, short. Capsule 1-seeded.
