Characteristics

Farinose shrublets. Leaves alternate, exstipulate. Flowers in pedunculate leaf-opposed capitula, congested, polygamous, the upper one hermaphrodite, the lateral ones hermaphrodite or male. Calyx gamosepalous, the tube very short in male flowers, 3–5 mm. long and cylindrical in hermaphrodite flowers; segments 5. Stamens many, inserted in the mouth of the calyx-tube. Ovary inferior, syncarpous, of 2 carpels, 2-locular; ovules 1 per cell, pendulous; style 1, stigmas 2. Fruit compound, spiny.
