Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 10 m. high, with most parts (including the young twigs) densely hairy.. Leaf-blades ovate, elliptic or obovate, 5–19 cm. long, 2–7 cm. wide, shortly acuminate at apex, rounded or cordate at base, nearly glabrous (except the nerves) to densely hairy, subcoriaceous; (6–)9–11 pairs of main lateral nerves; domatia absent; petiole 2–3 mm. long, hairy; stipules triangular, 2–3 mm. long, pubescent outside, fused at the base, with awns 4–8 mm. long.. Flowers 6–8-merous, in rather lax, 1–5-flowered inflorescences; peduncle up to 5 mm.; pedicel 2–7 mm. long, hairy; bracts cupular but not resembling calyx-limb, sometimes with leafy appendages; bracteoles free, subulate, usually 1 per flower.. Calyx-tube with dense long spreading hairs, yellowish in the dried state; limb a gradually widening tube 3–5 mm. long, pubescent, with subulate lobes 6–10 mm. long.. Corolla white or greenish, pubescent outside only on the lobes; tube 10 mm. long, the upper half pubescent within; lobes 11–14 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, the bases pubescent inside.. Filaments 2–3 mm. long; anthers ± 9 mm. long, with long hairs all over.. Placenta with 4–7 ovules arranged in a U-shape; style hairy towards the tip, ±18 mm. long including the 3–4 mm. long lobes.. Fruits ? greyish, spherical or transversely flattened, sometimes ribbed towards the tip, 15 mm. long, 20 mm. wide, with a thick sclerified wall, usually rather warty and pubescent.. Seeds 3–6 in each chamber, ± ellipsoid, with a colliculate testa and slightly curved hilum.
