Characteristics

Shrub or sometimes a small tree, 1.5–4(–6) m. high, with puberulous or shortly hirsute young twigs.. Leaf-blades mostly obovate, but sometimes elliptic or ovate, (3–)5–9(–11) cm. long, (1–)2–4(–5) cm. wide, acute or acuminate at apex, cuneate or rounded at base, glabrous except for the midrib bearing distinct hairs (at least at the base) above and beneath, coriaceous, often glossy above; 3–4(–5) pairs of main lateral nerves; domatia present or absent; petioles 1–5(–7) mm. long, puberulous or shortly hirsute; stipules sheathing, puberulous, with awns up to 5 mm. long.. Flowers 6(–7)-merous, sweetly scented, in (1–)3–5-flowered subsessile inflorescences; pedicels up to 3 mm. long, shortly hirsute; bracts and bracteoles cupular, the proximal ones especially with 2 distinct appendages, upper cupules 2-dentate, hirsute.. Calyx-tube hirsute; limb tubular, ± 2 mm. high, bearing short subulate lobes ± 0.5 mm. long.. Corolla white; tube 3–9 mm. long, with rather sparse long hairs within and sometimes with sparse hairs outside; lobes 3–8 mm. long, 2–3 mm. wide, glabrous or pubescent outside (the margins always ciliate).. Stamens with an attenuate filament 1.5–3 mm. long; anthers 3–4.5 mm. long, obtuse or acute at tip, when acute sometimes topped by a single hair.. Placenta with 2 collateral ovules, rarely with a third ovule inserted between them; style glabrous or with a few hairs towards top and on the lobes, 8–12 mm. long, including lobes of ± 2 mm.. Fruits red, ellipsoid, ± 7 mm. long, 5 mm. in diameter.. Seeds 1 or 2 in each chamber, ± ellipsoidal; hilum linear and curved; testa colliculate.
