Characteristics

Leaves not markedly dimorphic; blades 2–10.5 × 0.5–3.3 cm, narrowly elliptic to elliptic or oblong-elliptic, acute or less often obtuse at the apex, cuneate at the base, recurved at the margin, papery or subcoriaceous, glabrous on both surfaces; midrib flat above, prominent beneath, glabrous above and below; lateral nerves in c. 3 main pairs, usually apparent on both surfaces; tertiary nerves sometimes apparent above, always obscure beneath; domatia with a pit-like excavation, sometimes rather shallow, ciliate or densely hairy; petiole 1.5–5 mm long, glabrous; stipule limbs c. 1 mm long puberulous outside with awns 0.5–1.5 mm long.

Corolla white; tube 4–8 mm long, 1.5–2 mm in diameter, pubescent towards top outside and ± hairy especially in throat and upper part of tube inside; lobes 3–4.5 × 2 mm, obtuse to rounded, pubescent below, glabrous or with a few hairs near tip above.
Inflorescences mostly borne in leaf axils but also at naked nodes, very shortly pedunculate, 1–3(4)-flowered; peduncles 0.5–0.75 mm long; branches 0.75–1 mm long, or 1.25 mm long in fruit; bract and bracteoles cupular, pubescent.
Calyx tube glabrous, hidden by bracteolar cup; limb-tube (1.5)2 mm high, widening towards the top, truncate, not split or with 1 or more splits, pubescent.
Style glabrous or with a few short hairs at the top; pollen presenter held above the throat, c. 1.5–2.5 mm long; ovules 2 per placenta.
Shrub (0.5)1–4(5) m high; young twigs with greyish or light brown bark, puberulous, pubescent or sometimes glabrous.
Filaments c. 2 mm long; anthers inframedifixed, 1.5–3 mm long, glabrous.
Flowers 5(6)-merous, scented, subsessile.
Fruit red, c. 9 mm in diameter.
