Characteristics

Tree, rarely a shrub, (4–)6–20 m. high, with the young twigs, like most of the vegetative parts, glabrous.. Leaf-blades ovate, elliptic or obovate, 10–23(–28) cm. long, 3–9(–11) cm. wide, with an acumen up to 3 cm. long, rounded or cuneate at base, glabrous except the sparsely pubescent nerves and the tufted domatia beneath, subcoriaceous; 5–10 pairs of main lateral nerves; petiole ± 1 cm. long, with 2 lateral rows of hairs (which may be decurrent on the outside of the stipules); stipules sheathing, 1–2 mm. long, with awns 4–8 mm. long.. Flowers 6-merous, sweetly scented, in rather lax, 5–10-flowered inflorescences; peduncle up to 5 mm.; bracts cupular but not resembling calyx-limb, often with conspicuous leafy appendages (these may attain ± the size of a normal leaf-blade); pedicel up to 5 mm. long, provided with 2 subopposite free bracteoles.. Calyx glabrous, glabrescent or pubescent; limb a gradually widening tube with 6 teeth up to 4 mm. long, beset with conspicuous colleters (mostly ± in 2 horizontal rows) within.. Corolla white, outside pubescent only on the lobes; tube 6–11 mm. long, 2–3 mm. in diameter, inside glabrous save for fascicles of long hairs between the insertion of the filaments; lobes 7–15 mm. long, 2–4 mm. wide.. Filaments 4–11 mm. long; anthers versatile, with sparse long hairs.. Placenta thin, with (5–)8–16 transversely flattened, densely placed ovules; style glabrous or with a few long hairs towards the tip, 14–25 mm. long including lobes of 2–5 mm..
